GREEN JOB TRAINING FOR VETERANS



Swords to Plowshares is currently enrolling students for the Diablo Valley College green jobs training program. The training is provided at NO COST to qualifying veterans (follow the read more link below for qualification criteria). In addition, Swords to Plowshares will assist those who complete the training with entry-level job placement. The training program begins February 16, 2010 and runs through April 10, 2010.

MILITARY SPOUSES RESIDENCY RELIEF ACT PRELIMINARY EXPLANATION
The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) was signed into law on November 11, 2009. This amends the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) granting military spouses similar rights with regards to residency for tax and property purposes. The SCRA protects a Servicemember’s military pay from income taxes of the state where he or she is stationed unless that state is also the Servicemembers declared state of residence. READ MORE »
NEW RESEARCH PROVIDES PRELIMINARY DATA ON CHILDREN’S EXPERIENCE WHEN PARENTS DEPLOY
The RAND Corporation’s study researching the impact of military deployments on children ages 11 to 17 and their parents provided scientific confirmation of many anecdotal reports. The study, comissioned by The National Military Family Association, surveyed 1,507 parent and child sets (3,014 participants in all). READ MORE »
APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED FOR NATIONAL MILITARY FAMILY ASSOCIATION MILITARY SPOUSE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The National Military Family Association is accepting applications for its Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program. Scholarships of up to $1,000 are awarded to military spouses to obtain professional certification or to attend post secondary or graduate school. The program consists of a general scholarship, a scholarship for spouses of the wounded, and a scholarship for spouses of the fallen. Thanks to a partnership with the Fisher House Foundation, Folds of Honor Foundation, and BAE Systems, the Association is able to provide scholarships to a larger number of deserving military spouses. COMING HOME PROJECT TO HOLD SERVICE PROVIDERS RETREAT
February 18 – 21 2010, The Coming Home Project will host a retreat for service providers working directly with a caseload of at least 50% OIF and OEF veterans and/or their families. VETERANS REPORT DELAYS IN NEW GI BILL AWARD
The Navy Times reported Thursday that veterans receiving new GI Bill benefits are reporting delays in receipt of their living stipend. The article raises concerns that these delays will drive many veterans to become discouraged and drop out of school.
According to Brian Hawthorne of Student Veterans of America, many veterans find that the emergency disbursement of $3,000 authorized by the VA earlier this year is failing to meet their needs.

WASHINGTON – James S. Gordon, MD, author of Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression, will lead a professional education Webinar Thursday on concerns for emotional caregivers for the military community.
Doctor Gordon, who has worked extensively with US military, will lead the training entitled “Professionals Working with the Grieving and Traumatized: Recognizing and Caring for Your Own Secondary Trauma and Compassion Fatigue,” to educate care giving professionals working with military trauma about the dangers of ignoring their own compassion fatigue.
